Abstract
Purpose: To study the common age group and mode of injury in pediatric ocular trauma.
Study Design: Retrospective Study
Materials and Methods: The study included all children up to 16 years of age who presented to the OPD / emergency services with trauma. The data was collected from Nov’19 till 17 Sept’21. A detailed history of the injury along with other medical history was obtained. Detailed evaluation included visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy and fundoscopy.
Results: Total of 341 children with ocular trauma were evaluated. The common age group of presentation was noted as 11- 16 years(38.02%) followed by 6-10 years(36.61%). The most common mode of injury was found out to be blunt trauma (57.04%) followed by penetrating trauma (14.08%)
Conclusion: Blunt trauma being the most common cause of ocular injury in children can be prevented essentially by making the child educated and ensuring the proper protection of the eyes to prevent morbidity associated with the trauma.
