Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the visual and surgical outcomes of phacoemulsification in patients with congenital uveal coloboma
Methods: 19 eyes of 15 patients (11 M & 4 F) of visually significant cataract with coexisting uveal coloboma who underwent phacoemulsification were included. Demographic data, BCVA, corneal diameter, intraoperative and postoperative complications were analyzed. Results: The mean age at surgery was 37.62 years (range 18-53 yrs). Horizontal corneal diameter was <10 mm in 11 eyes (57.9%). Intraoperatively 2 eyes (10.5%) had PCR. The mean BCVA improved from logMAR 1.78±0.72 to logMAR 0.87±0.69 (p=0.0034). Postoperatively raised IOP seen in 4 (21%) eyes and 4 (21%) eyes developed PCO requiring Nd:YAG capsulotomy. Conclusion: Favourable visual outcomes can be achieved with phacoemulsification in eyes with uveal coloboma, however suboptimal outcomes seen in patients with microcornea, intraoperative and postoperative complications.
