Abstract
AIMS To investigate the causes and outcomes of different ocular traumas in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS It is a prospective observational study of children under 15 years of age presenting to ophthalmology OPD or emergency department with eye injuries. Various information was collected on the demographic details of the child, the cause, mechanism, site and place of injury. Thorough ocular examination and necessary investigations were done and appropriate treatment was given. Final visual acuity was recorded after treatment and follow up done. RESULTS The study showed 3:2 M: F incidence. Blunt trauma was the commonest cause. Road traffic accidents were accidental. There was high incidence of firework and toy gun injuries. Corneal perforation was a very common injury and perforating object being pen or pencil. No child was bilaterally blind due to injury. CONCLUSION Blunt and perforating trauma are fairly common. Outcome of eye injuries were better with early presentation to hospital
