Abstract

Purpose: To report a case with an erythematous lesion over left trigeminal nerve dermatome with ocular involvement & maternal chicken pox.

Clinical history: A 2 month-old male infant presented with an irregular healed erythematous cicatrising scarred skin along the distribution of the Vth nerve involving the upper lid & ocular involvement. The Mother had varicella infection at 10 weeks of gestation.A diagnosis of Herpes Zoster ophthalmicus was made clinically.

Intervention and outcome: The infant was started on topical Homatropine (LE),Acyclovir (LE),Tobramycin+Dexamethasone. Dermatologist opinion was sought for scarred skin lesions.The follow up, for a year demonstrated evidence of infection in RE & sequelae.

Conclusion:The present case is an apparently one of the rare reported cases of congenital herpes zoster ophthalmicus in an infant since 1993.The lesion was quite advanced at birth with Vth nerve involvement indicated that the condition to be acquired in utero.
