Abstract
AIM: To study the clinical and bacteriological profile of congenital dacryocystitis and its treatment outcome based on sensitivity pattern of isolated microorganisms.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: A study was conducted on 50 children presenting with congenital dacryocystitis for a study period of 1 year. Samples were collected by sterile cotton swab from the discharge and were sent for gram staining , culture and sensitivity and antibiotic susceptibility.
RESULTS: Culture positivity was noted in 60% of patients. Gram positive bacteria were predominant isolates out of which Staphylococcus aureus constituted 56%. Gram positive and gram negative bacteria have shown high susceptibility to Moxifloxacin and Tobramycin respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: Staphylococcus aureus was found to be most common pathogen in congenital dacryocystitis. Microbial culture and sensitivity should be performed in samples from all patients having dacryocystitis for its appropriate and effective management.
