Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the correlation between dry eye and refractive error in paediatric population.
METHODS:In this prospective cross sectional study, 300 children were included in the age range of 8-12 years. They
were classified as Group 1- Emmetropia /Astigmatism, Group 2- Simple myopia/Compound myopic astigmatism, Group 3- Simple hyperopia/Mixed astigmatism. Participants underwent dry eye evaluation which included blink rate, Schirmer’s test 1 &2, and Tear film break up time (TBUT).
RESULTS: Group 1 mean values of Schirmer’s 1, Schirmer’s 2, TBUT, blink rate were 32.5 mm, 23.25 mm, 11 sec, and 7.65/min respectively. Group 2 mean values of Schirmer’s 1, Schirmer’s 2, TBUT, blink rate were 26.12 mm, 21.75 mm, 8.7 sec, and 7/min respectively. CONCLUSION: Significant difference was noted between Group 1 and 2. This study proved correlation between myopia and dry eye among paediatric population. This study explores the possible role of dry eye as a myopia risk factor.
