Abstract
60 patients with visual field defects post cerebrovascular accidents [CVA] were retrospectively analyzed in this study. 70 % of the patients had PCA infarct. In 25 % of the patients MCA infarcts were noted. Thalamic infarct was the CVA noted in 10 %.
Homonymous hemianopia was the field defect, depicted in 75 % of these patients. Congruity was noted in 80 % of these patients. Macular sparing field defects were noted in 3 % of the patients.
16 % of these patients presented with homonymous quadrantanopia, field defects being, pie in the sky [8 %] and pie in the floor [8%].9 % of the patients presented with complete field loss.
Follow up visual field testing was performed six monthly. Visual field defects noted post CVA, persist and do not improve rapidly. Prism aids like Eli Peli prisms can be tried in patients with congruous homonymous hemianopia.
In 5% of the patients receiving early intervention for CVA, field defects reversed completely.
