Abstract

Purpose:Hypertension affects the eye causing 3 types of ocular damage namely, choroidopathy, retinopathy, and optic neuropathy. Hypertensive retinopathy is a condition characterized by retinal vascular signs in people with elevated blood pressure.

Method:A 60 yr housewife presented with sudden loss of vision in left eye for from last 4 days. It was associated with generalised headache and body weakness.

Result:On ocular examination her vision was 6/12 in right eye and finger count at 3meters in left eye. There was Relative Afferent Pupil Defect in left eye. Dilated fundus examination revealed swollen hyperaemic disc with blurred margins in left eye. She underwent Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial but her vision didnot improve. Her blood pressure was 200/120.After control of blood pressure her vision finally improved to 6/12.

Conclusion:Optic neuritis should be diagnosed at an urgent basis in order to prevent ocular morbidity and differentiated from its similar conditions.
