Abstract
We present a series of 124 eyes of 101 patients of optic neuritis. Complete ophthalmic examination and MRI was done in all patients. Mean age was 36.60± 13.40 years. Females were more affected (60.39%) . 65 eyes (52.4%) had papillitis and 59 eyes (47.6%) had retrobulbar neuritis. 45.2% (56 eyes) had visual acuity of 20/200 or worse during presentation. Bilaterality was seen in 23 patients (22.77%). Recurrence was seen in 18 patients (17.8%) in which 16 had retrobulbar neuritis and 2 had papillitis . Bilateral, recurrent cases and patients with MRI features of demyelination were subjected to anti NMO, anti MOG antibodies testing and auto immune profiling. 3 patients had multiple sclerosis, 4 were positive for anti NMO, 7 were positive for anti MOG and 2 were positive for ANA. These patients were started on immunosuppressants by a neurologist. Timely diagnosis and prompt referral to a neurologist is necessary in suspected cases.
