Abstract

Purpose: To report clinical profile, visual outcome and prognostic factors of congenital aniridia

Methods: Patients with congenital aniridia seen in last 18 years, were included. Patient’s demographic details, visual acuity(VA), extent of aniridia, pachymetry and history of cataract surgery were noted

Results: Among 13 patients, male female ratio was 7:6. Mean age at presentation was 7.63 years and all had bilateral involvement. 76.92% of patients had complete and 23.07% had partial aniridia. Mean VA was 1.65 log mar. Mean pachymetry was 687.36 um. Cataract, Glaucoma, strabismus and nystagmus were noted in 85%,76.9%, 46.15% and 53.15% of patients respectively. Mean age of cataract surgery was 12.5 years and VA improved to 1.14 log mar after cataract surgery. Optic atrophy and foveal hypoplasia were seen in 23.08% and 15.38% of patients respectively

Conclusion: Aniridia associated with cataract, glaucoma, strabismus usually needs surgery but the visual outcome remains always poor.
