Abstract
AIM: To analyze the demography, pattern and amount of astigmatism in elderly population undergoing cataract surgery in Western India.
METHODS: Retrospective study. A total of 385 patients with astigmatism, of more than 50 years of age undergoing cataract surgery, were studied at a Tertiary-care-hospital. Preoperatively, IOL master measurements were done in all the cases and the pattern and amount of astigmatism were studied.
RESULTS: Out of 385 cases, 56% were males and showed astigmatism (p=0.00). Against-the-rule astigmatism (ATR) was found in 68% cases and 23% cases had with-the-rule (WTR) type (p=0.00). The amount of astigmatism was found to be increased with age (p=0.00029). The number of patients with ATR also increased with age and was more common between the age group of 61-70 years (p=0.00).
CONCLUSION: Astigmatism is common in elderly males of more than 60 years. Against-the-rule is more common and the amount of astigmatism increases with aging eyes.
