Abstract
Aim: To study the clinical presentation of Acute Non-Accommodative Esotropia (ANAET) and discuss the management approaches.
Materials and Methods:Records of 16 children diagnosed with ANAET were retrospectively reviewed. Duration of squint, Visual acuity, refraction, orthoptic evaluation and diplopia charting was documented.
Results: Mean age was 6.06 years. Mean duration of squint was 8.37 weeks. History of predisposing factors was present in 5 patients. 3 patients had hypermetropia and 5 patients complained of diplopia. Mean esodeviation for near and distance was 35 ∆. 4 patients underwent strabismus surgery, 3 were treated with low dose of oral steroids, 1 patient was given prism trial and 7 were advised patching. Visual acuity remained 6/6 in all the patients.
Conclusion: ANAET has variable age of onset in children. Meticulous examination, proper investigation, prompt diagnosis and early treatment can prevent visual disturbance and amblyopia in these children.
