Abstract
Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVRL) is the commonest masquerade seen in elderly patients and needs vitreous biopsy for confirmation. However, false negative results following vitrectomy are frequently seen. We describe a minimally invasive subretinal biopsy (MISB) technique and its outcomes in cases of PVRL. 25 gauge vitrectomy was performed along with vitreous sampling (diluted and undiluted), posterior hyaloid removal, subretinal aspiration of lymphoma cells through a retinotomy and gas tamponade. 7 eyes of 7 patients (5 males) with a mean age of. 66 years (range 55-77 years) were included. Cytology of vitreous was diagnostic of PVRL in 2 patients (28.57%) while subretinal aspirate detected lymphoma cells it all cases (100%). None of the patients experienced any intra or post-operative complications. MISB increases the yield of detecting lymphoma cells as compared to vitreous biopsy alone, negating the need for chorio-retinal biopsy and its associated complications.
