Abstract

Aim – To report the incidence, presentation, outcomes of persistent ROP.

Purpose – A review of babies for ROP screening (1/7/2015 – 1/7/2021) was done for persistent ROP. Persistent ROP is stage 2 ROP in Zone II/III beyond 45 weeks post-conceptional age (PCA). Laser photocoagulation to the avascular area anterior to the ridge was given.

Results – Of 3596 babies, 18 babies (0.5%) had persistent ROP. Mean PCA at birth was 30.08 weeks (SD – 1.81). Mean birth weight was 1191.66g (SD – 239). Mean PCA on day of ROP laser was 47.33 weeks (SD 33.69). Highest stage attained was Zone II stage 2 in 10 eyes, Zone II stage 3 in 6 eyes, Zone III stage 2 in 17 eyes and Zone III stage 3 in 3 eyes. Days from highest stage attained to ROP laser was 75.5 days (SD-38.2). Regression of the stage was seen in all eyes 1-week post laser. No baby required a repeat ROP laser.

Conclusion – Persistent ROP requires a longer follow-up and laser photocoagulation leads to good resolution.
