Abstract
AIM: To evaluate clinical profile of intraocular foreign body injury in children and factors associated with endophthalmitis
METHODS: Cross sectional study of 100 children with intraocular foreign body injury from OPD at tertiary eye centre from Jan 2020 to Dec 2020
RESULTS: The mean age was 10years, males 67%. Overall most common cause was fireworks (30%); with unknown (40%), fireworks (40%), fireworks (55.5%) and vegetative matter (60%) being most common in the age groups 0-5, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-20year age groups respectively. Fireworks was most common cause in males (44.7%) and vegetative in females (45.5%). Endophthalmitis was found in 22%, with high risk in vegetative injury, zone II wounds, uveal tissue prolapse and traumatic lens injury.
CONCLUSION: IOFB profile in children is different than in adults, with specific risk factors for endophthalmitis. Thus appropriate management is important to prevent permanent loss of sight.
