Abstract
Aim: To find out the effectiveness of oral Propranolol in preventing choroidal effusion post combined trabeculotomy with trabeculectomy in children with Sturge Weber Syndrome.
Design: Institution based prospective, non-randomized, case control study.
Method: In a period of one year, 7 eyes of 6 patients were chosen as cases and 7 eyes from 7 patients were taken as control. Cases received peri-operative oral Propranolol while controls did not. Surgery was done on all 12 patients and they were followed up at 1 month, 3 months and 9 months. The mean IOP was found to be reduced from 28+/-4 to 14+/-3 mm Hg. Only 1 patient in the cases group and 4 out of 7 patients in the control group developed vision threatening choroidal effusion. No modification of the existing surgical procedure was done. No adverse effects of propranolol was noted.
Result: Oral propranolol seems to be an effective method to minimize the development of sight threatening choroidal effusion after glaucoma surgery in SWS.
