Abstract
Purpose: To report outcomes in cases of endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) following COVID-19 infection.
Methodology: In retrospective study, patients with EE, who had recent history of COVID-19 infection were recruited.
Results: Five patients (8 eyes) were included. Three patients presented with bilateral EE, and two patients had unilatera diseasel. Mean duration of onset of ocular symptoms was 21.8+4.71 days. Out of 8 eyes, 6 eyes required surgical intervention, whereas 2 eyes were managed with intravitreal antibiotics. Two patients showed growth for aspergillus fumigatus, one patient for candida albicans and two patients had no growth from vitreous biopsy. Retina was attached in all five patients at mean follow up of 35.2+24.87 days.
Conclusion: High dose corticosteroid therapy in management of moderate and severe COVID -19 infection may be associated with EE, predominantly fungal endophthalmitis.
