Abstract
Purpose: To review the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of open globe injuries. Factors predictive of profound visual loss after open globe injury were identifies. Methods: A retrospective study of Open-globe injury cases. Demographics, causes and mechanism of injury, visual acuity, clinical presentations and final outcome were evaluated. Result:108 eyes of 104 patient were studied. 62.5% were male and mean age was 48 years. Majority were caused by RTA (35.6%),followed by fall (24%),recreational activity(21.2%) and assault (19.2%).62.5% presented with VA less than 5/200.26.8% eyes had Zone-II injury and 47.8% sustained profound visual loss with7.4% eyes requiring evisceration/ enucleation.37% eyes had low OTSI. Profound visual loss was associated with poor initial VA, positive RAPD and Zone III injury .Conclusion: Profound visual loss was still common after open- globe injury. Identifying poor prognostic factor helps guide clinical management and facilitates counseling for patients.
