Abstract

Aim:To study the prevalence and modes of agriculture related corneal injuries in rural population. Materials and Methods: Retrospective study of patients having corneal trauma in the field. Data retrieved from hospital record include mode of injury, symptoms, treatment taken and outcome. Results: Out of 106 patients sustained corneal trauma during agricultural activities with being males.The cause of injuries due to sugarcane/ cheri leaves, wheat, cattle tail, insect attack, wooden twig and others was 28.3%,21.7%,18.9%,15.0% and 16.0%, respectively.37.7% developed fungal corneal ulcer 28.3% had corneal laceration Out of total injured 106 injured 51.9% took treatment and 84.9% suffered diminution of vision and 15.0% had phthisis bulbi. Conclusion: Agriculture related corneal injuries being an occupational hazard. Delay and lack of treatment are responsible for corneal blindness in these patients. Increasing awareness amongst farmers to wear protective glasses advised.
