Abstract
A Goretex, an inert, synthetic, and biocompatible material that was initially used by cardiovascular surgeons as a graft for vascular defects, was later used as sealing material for corneal perforations and as suture materials in ophthalmology. Its use can be expanded in the field of ocular surface disorders such as to prevent symblepharon recurrence following chemical injury. We have analyzed the long-term outcomes of its use on 11 eyes of 10 patients with mild, moderate, and severe grade symblepharon. The mean age was 17 years(12-39 years), preoperative visual acuity (IQR) log MAR improved from 1.78 log MAR(1.0-2.3) to 0.48(0.18-1.78) postoperatively, median Follow-up(IQR) was 36.0 months (12-96), Median Time interval between the onset of symptom and presentation was 9.0months(1-48). The success rate in our study was 54.5% with very non-sight-threatening complications. Goretex proved to be safe and repeatable in children.
