Abstract

SGA infant is smaller than normal for baby’s gender and age.In our hospital,SGA babies are examined within first week of life,for any ocular changes.This is a prospective descriptive study over 1 year,on 100 SGA babies admitted in NICU.12 babies had superficial retinal hemorrhage-2 had white dot centre hemorrhage and 3 had vitreous hemorrhage also.We have tried to introspect the etiology for it.6 of these babies had IUGR.Mean GA, birth weight and head circumference are 33 weeks,1.8 kg and 29.7cm respectively.Assisted vaginal delivery done for 2 babies,1 had meconium stained liquor. Anemia,thrombocytopenia and septicemia seen in 2 babies each.2 mothers had prolonged labour.1 baby had pulmonary hemorrhage.1 baby was suspected with FEVR. No history of shaken baby syndrome. 3 of the babies later developed ROP,1 needed treatment.Spontaneous regression of hemorrhages seen in most.We must screen all SGA and IUGR babies at an early age to collaborate the etiology with the ocular changes.
