Abstract

AIM:To assess ocular trauma caused by firecrackers in Bokaro,Jharkhand.age,severity of injuries,management and outcome being reference indicesMETHODS:retrospective chart review of all ocular trauma cases presenting to the department during October -November Demographic data,visual acuity,management,outcome (visual and facial morbidity) were studied.Reference period covered 3.26 lakh populationRESULTS:342 patients with ocular trauma caused by firecrackers,about 2.21% of inpatients (15478).number of trauma caused by firecrackers decreased.Median age was12.5(0.75-73) years,age groups of patients were 0-9y (36.26%) and 10-19y(21.93%).percentage of enucleation/evisceration was 14.33%(49 cases).initial visual acuities were no light perception (NLP) in 84 eyes(24.56%),and 0.3-1.0 in 17eyes(4.97%).final visual acuities were NLP in 84 eyes(24.56%),and 0.3-1.0 in 56 eyes(16.37%).CONCLUSION:ocular traumas have decreased since 2014 but firecracker injuries are still a major public health concern.
