Abstract
Young onset diabetes defined as diagnosis at <40years is increasingly diagnosed in adolescents & young adults.AIMS-To evaluate the rate of DR & assess its severity in young diabetics.METHODOLOGY-It was a 1year hospital based observational study conducted in AMCH,Dibrugarh where 160 patients with DM upto 40yrs were evaluated.FFA,OCT done wherever indicated & FBS,PPBS,HbA1c were done in all cases.Statistical analysis was done using spss & Microsoft excel 2010.RESULTS-Majority (80.63%) had T2DM.Rate of any DR was 16.25% & majority had mild NPDR with PDR in 11.53%.Prevelance of retinopathy was more in T1 cases(35.48%) than in T2(11.63%).Duration of DM & HbA1c were significantly associated with prevalence & severity of retinopathy. CONCLUSION-Nearly one in five young diabetics had retinopathy. Therefore, a baseline fundus examination should be done at the time of diagnosis. Early detection & treatment could reduce morbidity in such young patients during their productive years of adulthood.
