Abstract
Introduction: Benzodiazepines have demonstrated efficacy in treating patients with epilepsy, anxiety disorders, etc. We report the first possible case of maculopathy associated with the longstanding intake of Oxazepam.
Case report: A 35-year-old male presented with defective vision in both eyes since 1 month. He was a known case of anxiety disorder and was Oxazepam 15mg single dose tablet daily since 7 years. On examination, his BCVA in both eyes was 6/18. Anterior segment examination was unremarkable. Fundus examination revealed subtle RPE changes at the fovea. Fundus autofluorescence demonstrated hypoautofluorescence at the fovea with perifoveal mottled hyperautofluoresence. Spectral domain OCT revealed foveal thinning and subfoveal photoreceptor atrophy. mfERG revealed significantly blunted foveal amplitudes bilaterally. On the basis of clinical findings, absence of any other contributory history and ancillary imaging, a diagnosis of oxazepam-induced maculopathy was made.
