Abstract
In a 6-year retrospective observational study, the clinical outcomes of 38 eyes of 38 patients with center-involving DME in vitrectomised eyes treated for tractional complications of PDR in people with type 2 diabetes with at least 12 months follow-up data were assessed. Visual acuity and morphological outcomes were compared between those who accepted treatment versus those who were observed. More than half of the (n=22) eyes were immediately treated for DME, and treatment was deferred for the rest. At one year, there was a statistically significant reduction in mean central subfield thickness in treated (478.6 to 306.2 microns; p<0.001) as well as observed (372 to 282 microns; p<0.0001) eyes but the change was comparable (p=0.216). The visual acuity improvement also showed a similar trend in the deferred and treated group (p=0.124). The study results suggest that pre-existing or new onset DME post PPV for PDR may resolve with time and may not require immediate treatment.
