Abstract
The effects of medical and surgical decompression in management of dysthyroid optic neuropathy are reported in this study. A retrospective review of medical records of 14 patients with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) treated with intravenous glucocorticoids and orbital decompression was conducted at a tertiary centre over a period of 2 years. The pre versus post treatment efficacies in these patients were assessed using several indices, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, ocular alignment, ocular motility, and exophthalmos. Both medical and surgical decompression showed good therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of sight-threatening TAO. In some patients who were resistant to intravenous glucocorticoids, orbital decompression was done.
