Abstract
Introduction: Dry eye disease is a multifactorial disorder of the tear film which may have systemic associations.
Case description: A 27year old male presented with recurrent episodes of irritation in both eyes. His ocular examination was normal except for a reduced tear film meniscus height and tear film break-up time with a persistently low Schirmer’s test value. Treatment was started for dry eye disease with topical tear substitutes. Blood investigations were normal with a negative rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibody assay. History revealed an attack of severe conjunctivitis three years back , associated with joint pains, oral ulcers and urinary tract infection lasting for one month for which he was symptomatically treated and was diagnosed to have Reiter’s syndrome. His ocular dryness persisted with no systemic recurrences.
Conclusion: Dry eye disease is a rare presentation of Reiter’s syndrome indicating the need for further detailed systemic evaluation and management.
