Abstract
Purpose: To assess the platelet count and size characteristics in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) patients and compare them to those in healthy controls.
Materials and Methods: 100 patients with RVO (Group1) and 100 controls (Group 2). The levels of mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), and platelet count (PC) were measured in both groups.
Results: Mean MPV ,PDW ,PCT and PC were 12.18±2.22 ,17.09±1.44,0.219±0.044 and 1.82±17057.06 in RVO patients and 11.99±1.597, 17.09±1.725,0.21±0.035 and 1.81±15177.23 in controls respectively. Difference was insignificant in MPV (p=0.472), PDW (p=0.998), PCT (p=0.693) and PC (p=0.909) between two groups.
Conclusion: This study suggests MPV, PDW, PCT, Platelet count is not significantly different in patients presenting with a RVO from normal age matched controls. This suggests that thrombosis performs a lesser role in the etiopathogenesis of RVO and arteriosclerosis strikes as being the considerable factor.
