Abstract
AIM:To compare unilateral versus bilateral strabismus surgery in intermittent exotropia(IEX) with lateral incomitance(LI)
METHOD:An interventional study was conducted on 40 patients with IEX (aged >7yrs) having significant LI. They were categorized into two groups. Group B underwent B/L asymmetric lateral rectus (LR) recession & group U underwent U/L LR recession & medial rectus (MR) resection based on postpatch deviation. Surgical outcome was considered successful if primary deviation was within ±8PD & LI was <5PD. RESULT:The mean LI preop & postop was 8.3± 1.63PD & 2.8± 2.38PD in group B & 8.9± 1.37PD & 3.7± 2.54PD in group U respectively. There was no statistical significant difference between postop LI between two groups (p=0.254) but statistical significant difference was observed between preop and postop LI in each group (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION:Both procedures are equally efficacious in achieving ocular alignment & improving significant LI in IEX with deviations between 15-35PD.
