Abstract
We aimed to study the effectiveness of radionuclide dacryoscintigraphy in assessing patency of naso-lacrimal passage, and locating site of obstruction in the passage. Study was conducted as an interventional study .Patients were evaluated using multiple converging holes colimeter attached to a e-cam gamma camera, with technetium 99mper technetate , instilled near medial canthus. Out of 32 cases of chronic dacryocystitis, Dacryoscintigraphy was suggestive of partial and complete obstruction in 7 and 22 cases respectively. In majority cases, obstruction was at level of neck of lacrimal sac. Repeated syringing at regular intervals with antibiotic solution was done in case of partial obstruction whereas DCR was done for complete obstruction. Dacryoscintigraphy is a simple method for assessing the patency of NLD. It can be utilized for detection of subclinical, partial or total lacrimal duct obstruction in patients with chronic dacryocystitis with little or no patient discomfort.
