Abstract
Aim: To assess efficacy of supratarsal single dose injection of TA in severe Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in children.
Method: 20 children having severe VKC (keratitis, gelatinous limbal infiltrates, giant papillae, with history of recurrence and resistance to conventional topical antiallergic drugs were given supratarsal injection of 20 mg TA.
Results: 25 TA injections were given in 25 eyes of 20 cases with severe VKC. Mean age was 10 (range: 5-18) years. Mean follow-up time was 8 months. In 20 patients, disease remission was observed for average 6 months (range: 2-10), complete resolution of lid edema and conjunctival chemosis, significant decrease in pannus and keratitis, reduction of papillae size were seen.
Conclusion: Treatment of severe acute VKC in children with supratarsal injection of 20 mg TA was efficacious and well tolerated. Though complete remission was not seen, significant improvement with decrease in frequency of acute recurrences was noted.
