Abstract
Aim: To compare the change in Macular Thickness (MT) in Type II Diabetic patients without retinopathy following Small Incision Cataract Surgery(SICS) and Phacoemulsification. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed to compare the pre-operative MT of 30 Diabetic patients without retinopathy undergoing SICS and Phacoemulsification each with the Post-operative MT at 3rd and 6th week, measured using Optical Coherence Tomography. Results: The average pre-operative MT in the SICS and Phacoemulsification group was 225.5±18.05µm and 223.95±18.05µm. The increase in MT at 3rd week Post-op was 38.35±32.64µm in SICS group and 57.14±37.03µm in the Phacoemulsification group (p=0.04). The increase in MT at 6th week Post-op was 51.25±38.70µm in SICS group and 83±37.2µm in the Phacoemulsification group (p=0.006). Conclusion: From our study, we can conclude that there was a significantly greater increase in MT in Phacoemulsification as compared to SICS in Diabetic patients without retinopathy.
