Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To study the effect of grades of myopia on macular thickness and volume in axial myopes compared to emmetropes using Spectral Domain-OCT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This is a hospital based, prospective, observational study for 12 months of 122 eyes of patients attending the outpatient department of a tertiary eye care centre.
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
Statistical analysis was performed with Epi Info TM 3.5.3 and χ 2 test. 78 subjects were compared with 44 controls .The study revealed that , mean Central Subfoveal Thickness(CST) in low myopia was 251.45±15.29µm, moderate myopia was 242.00±18.08µm and high myopia was 249.16±13.15µm. CST of controls were 258.77±4.94µm.Mean CST decreases with increasing grades of myopia.
CONCLUSION
Mechanical stretching effect of the retina, in high myopia is due to increased axial length resulting in chorioretinal atrophic changes in posterior pole, as manifested by decreased mean CST.
Keywords: myopia, spectral domain OCT, macula.
