Abstract

PURPOSE : To report a case of Chlorpromazine induced ocular side effects

METHODS :

A case report of a patient with diminution of vision in both eyes who is on oral chlorpromazine for schizophrenia since 15 years was examined for anterior segment and posterior segment findings including refraction for his decreased visual acuity.

DISCUSSION :

The patient had pigmentary deposits over cornea and lens. Studies show that chlorpromazine usage at high doses for long duration showed ocular findings like pigmentary deposits on lens and cornea . No medical treatment has shown significant benefit for pigmentary deposits. Reversibility of these eye lesions is not possible after discontinuation of the drug.

Conclusion : Psychiatrists, physicians, ophthalmologists and patients need to be aware of the potential adverse effect of this medication. Regular ophthalmological examination should be done during initial and later in the treatment course.
