Abstract

Central retinal artery occlusion is a serious ophthalmic emergency condition which can lead to sudden onset severe visual loss. It affects mainly the elderly population with atherosclerotic diseases. The reported incidence of CRAO in young patients is less than 1:50,000. Bilateral CRAO in children and young adults is a rare entity. Only few bilateral cases of CRAO in these age groups have been reported with various underlying etiologies and hence requires an extensive evaluation to identify the etiology. Hyper-coagulable states and emboli are the most important causes of CRAO in young. Hyperhomocysteinemia can lead to a retinal artery or vein occlusion or a combination of both. Here, we present a rare case of bilateral CRAO in a child with Hyperhomocysteinemia and hypertension, its management and final visual outcome.
