Abstract

AIM To evaluate efficacy, outcomes & complications of using amniotic membrane in primary trabeculectomy. METHOD 30 patients diagnosed with primary glaucoma refractory to topical antiglaucoma treatment, underwent trabeculectomy or combined surgery with amniotic membrane. These patients were assessed postoperatively over 3 months for visual acuity, IOP, slit-lamp examination & bleb morphology based on Moorfield’s Bleb Grading. RESULT 25 were complete successes & 5 were qualified successes with a mean IOP reduction of 43.3 ± 23.65%. All blebs were diffuse with moderate or low height with most having a central area of 25%, raised & mildly vascular. Complications seen were hyphaema & subconjunctival hemorrhage in 2 patients. CONCLUSION A significant reduction in IOP & good bleb morphology noted in 3rd month. Minimal bleb associated complications seen. The study concludes that amniotic membrane is an efficacious & safe physiologic anti-fibrotic alternative to Mitomycin C & 5-fluorouracil.
