Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the results of Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling in eyes with persistent chronic macular edema (CME).
Methods: A retrospective case series where patients’ with persistent CME who were treated with PPV with ILM due to unresponsiveness to more than 4 intravitreal injections were included. Subjects with previous history of vitreo-retinal surgery, grid laser and oral steroids were excluded. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness were noted pre and post PPV with ILM peeling.
Results: 6 eyes of 6 patients were included. Improvement in BCVA was noted in 5 out of 6 cases. The median macular thickness was 636 and 267 microns pre and post PPV with ILM peeling respectively (Mann Whitney, P=0.12).
Conclusion: PPV with ILM peeling showed clinically significant reduction in the macular edema in all cases. Reduction in macular edema post PPV with ILM peeling could have a positive impact on individual quality of life.
