Abstract
•AIM:To compare conventional versus inverse occlusion in treatment of amblyopia with eccentric fixation
•METHOD:A randomized comparative study was conducted in patients>12 years with unilateral amblyopia with eccentric fixation. Group C with 30 patients underwent conventional occlusion and Group I with 30 patients underwent inverse occlusion. BCVA, fixation pattern and stereopsis were assessed.
•RESULTS:The mean±S.D. of baseline visual acuity of amblyopic eye was 1.3±0.27 in group C and 1.32±0.32 in group I(p=0.784). After 3 months of occlusion, mean± S.D. of visual acuity of amblyopic eye was 1.17±0.15 in group C and 1.1±0.27 in group I. There was no statistical difference between two groups (p=0.223) but within groups, results are statistically significant (p=0.007 in group C, p<0.001 in group I). •CONCLUSION:Both methods of occlusion are equally effective but inverse occlusion is better as there are less compliant issues and it prevents reinforcement of anomalous fixation behavior.
