Abstract
RESEARCH DESIGN: Analytical Cross sectional Study
METHOD: 118 Smokers ,115 Non-smokers enrolled. The average smoking duration -16.51 years (range of 2 – 40 years). Average cigarettes smoked per day – 7.33 per day with a standard deviation – 5.04. Results compared to non-smoker group.
RESULTS: In smokers the average Dry Eye Score was 17.61 (range -10-29) with a standard deviation of 4.43 as compared to 17.15 (range – 10-29) with a standard deviation of 5.17. The debris found in smokers was 95 out of 118 and in nonsmokers it was 72 out of 115.
Average Schirmer’s I and II value – 12.83mm and 9.35mm respectively (smokers) compared to 13.15mm (p<0.05) and 9.57mm(p<0.05) (nonsmokers). The TBUT was 4.95 seconds (smokers; p<0.001) and 5.25 seconds (non-smokers) The conjunctival staining of smokers was higher (54 /118; p<0.05) when compared with nonsmokers (42/115). CONCLUSION: In this study we conclude that smoking is an important factor in the worsening the homeostasis of ocular surface.
