Abstract

Introduction: Glaucoma is one of the leading cause of blindness in India. There is a lack of awareness among patients and the unwillingness for regular follow up. This study was done to assess if any significant change can be brought about by imparting knowledge to these patients. Methodology: Interview by using predesigned, prevalidated, semi-structured questionnaire among 250 patients with glaucoma between June 2020- June 2021. The first set of responses were recorded. Knowledge was provided thereafter through a document detailing the nature of disease and treatment methods. Second set of responses were recorded. Results and Analysis: A drastic change in all aspects of their knowledge, attitude and practice regarding their disease was noted after providing knowledge (level of significance p<0.0001). Conclusion: Glaucoma, a potentially blinding disease essentially requires patient compliance and regular follow up hence the role of patient education is of utmost importance.
