Abstract
Back ground:-Patients with CKD on dialysis experience dry eyes. Our aim was to study the severity of ocular surface changes(goblet cell density, squamous metaplasia, conjunctival calcification) in CKD pts on dialysis and to correlate it to the type of dialysis.
Methods:-Patients on dialysis underwent Dry eye tests by Schirmer test, tear breakup time(TBUT),Conjunctival impression cytology, chest-X-ray for aortic calcification were reviewed and data analyzed.
Results:-Both groups were asymptomatic for dry eyes. Impression cytology showed drop in goblet cell density, presence of squamous metaplasia and conjunctival keratinization significantly more in the hemodialysis group, but the severity of squamous metaplasia was more advanced in the peritoneal dialysis group. No significant correlation seen between conjunctival calcification and aortic calcification.
Conclusion:-study highlights need for regular ophthalmic examination in dialysis patients to treat dry eyes and quality of life.
