Abstract
Purpose: To describe the phenomenon of spontaneous regression in ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN).
Methods: Retrospective study.
Results: Spontaneous regression was seen in 8 (2%) of 449 treatment-naïve OSSN. Mean age was 37 years. All were males with unilateral tumors; symptomatic for a mean of 3 months. Tumors arose in the interpalpebral region; 88% were located in the nasal quadrant and showed nodular (50%) or placoid (50%) morphology. Tumors measured a mean of 4 mm in size. Keratin (100%), intrinsic vessels (100%), feeder vessels (50%) and pigmentation (50%) were associated features. The diagnosis of OSSN was confirmed by anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Tumors regressed after a mean of 5 months from presumed onset and 2 months from presentation. No recurrences were noted at a mean follow up of 37 months after regression.
Conclusion: Spontaneous regression seen in 2% of OSSN sans any intervention, explained by possible immune-mediated reversal of dysplasia.
