Abstract
Purpose: To report cases of Posterior reverse encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) with varying etiologies, presentations and to study their treatment outcome.
Materials and methods: In this series, 4 cases of PRES with sudden gross diminution of vision are reported.
CASE 1 – 42-year-old male, known hypertensive with retroviral disease
CASE 2- 32-year-old male with headache and vomiting
CASE 3- 35-year-old male, case of type 2 diabetes mellitus and pulmonary tuberculosis
CASE 4- 25-year-old woman, 29 weeks of gestation with imminent eclampsia, morbid obesity, convulsion and vomiting
All patients were treated with respect to underlying etiology.
Results: Although appalling at presentation, cases show marked improvement clinically within the first week if the underlying etiopathology can be satisfactorily treated.
Conclusion: The need for high index of suspicion is required and improvement of clinical condition suggests excellent prognosis in patients of PRES.
