Abstract
Diabetic Retinopathy is a common microvascular complication of diabetes. The gene for Receptor of Advanced Glycation End Products is one of the crucial genes involved in the pathogenesis of various complications of diabetes, retinopathy being one of them. Any polymorphism in this gene will affect the downstream signalling cascade and have an influence on the pathophysiology of diabetic retinopathy. This article discusses the existing literature and current understanding on the association between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of RAGE gene and the risk of DR. A literature review was performed to find existing literature on the association between RAGE gene SNPs and the risk, progression and severity of developing DR. It was observed that gene polymorphism is highly variable when demography and ethnicity is concerned. Further studies involving large multicentric genome-wide assays encompassing diverse groups will be beneficial in establishing it as a genetic marker for DR.
