Abstract
Introduction: To study the clinical features, treatment, visual outcome and complications in Cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis (CMV – AU) in a tertiary eye care center in South India.
Method: Retrospective study
Results: Fifteen patients (20 eyes) were included in the study. Clinical features included anterior uveitis (85.7%), pigmented keratic precipitates (86.7%), corneal inflammation (80%) and iris atrophy (42.9%). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from aqueous aspirate was positive in 10 patients. 2 patients underwent glaucoma surgery. Duration of treatment with anti-viral agent(s) ranged between 13days – 48months. Final visual acuity improved in 40%. Recurrences were seen in eight patients in which seven had discontinued antiviral therapy. Complications included corneal decompensation, cataract and glaucoma.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis and treatment can improve visual outcome. Long term antiviral prophylaxis helps to reduce the recurrences.
