Abstract
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTION IN THE PREVENTION OF GLAUCOMA
AIM: To determine whether the dietary supplements is helpful in the prevention of glaucoma
METHOD: A prospective population based cohort study was carried. A total of 50 participants aged 55 and older for whom dietary data and ophthalmic data at baseline and follow up at baseline were available and who did not have glaucoma at baseline were included . A questionnaire was prepared . Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was applied to calculate the association.
RESULTS: Out of 50 participants , 8 patients developed glaucoma . The hazard ratio for retinol equivalents was 0.45,for vitamin B1 0.50 and for magnesium 2.25
CONCLUSION: Low intake of retinol and vitamin B1 and high intake of magnesium appear to be associated with increased risk of glaucoma.
