Abstract

50 eyes of 30 pediatric cataract patients who underwent cataract surgery between July 2019 and 2020 were analyzed and re-evaluated at 6months and 1 year postoperatively. Demographic and clinical factors were noted. Patients underwent VA assessment and comprehensive ocular examination. Amblyopia management details and adherence noted. 12 patients had congenital and 18 had developmental cataract and 20 had a delayed presentation of >1 year.

VAO developed in : all 5 pts <1 yr where only cortical wash was done , 12(80%) of 14 where SICS+PCIOL was done, 1(25%)of 4 where Phaco+PCIOL was done, 3(60%) of 5 who underwent SICS+PPV+AAV+PCIOL, 3(20%) of 15 who underwent Phaco+PPC+AAV+PCIOL. 30% of patients where a PPC+AAV was also done developed VAO in contrast to 82% where a PPC+AAV was not done (p<0.0001). Eyes with in the bag IOL implantation had lesser immediate postoperative uveitis. Early diagnosis, a meticulous surgery with strict amblyopia therapy have a better long term visual outcome.
