Abstract
High voltage electric injury may lead to various ocular damages and complications. Incidence of cataract in such cases ranges from 0.7- 8% and remains rarely reported. Though exact mechanism is still unclear, lenticular changes may be attributed to lens protein coagulation and subsequent osmotic changes to the subcapsular epithelium.
We report two cases of high voltage electric shock induced bilateral cataract in two young male patients. Electric cataract was an incidental finding in the second case who visited our OPD for corneal injury. Both the patients confirmed high voltage electric injury with entry and exit wounds on examination. No other ocular complication was found. Both of them underwent small incision cataract surgery with PCIOL implantation with good visual outcome in addition to primary corneal repair in second case.
Electric cataracts are usually bilateral. Timely intervention may result in good visual outcome in absence of other ocular complications.
