Abstract
Purpose: Evaluation of cognitive impairment in glaucoma patients and it’s affect on visual field assessment.
Methods: This prospective ,cross- sectional study comprised of 100 eyes of glaucoma patients, with no previous history of dementia. Visual field analysis was done using HFA 30-2 SITA and cognition was assessed using clock drawing test which were evaluated using Freund and Rakusa scoring scales.
Results: Glaucoma patients more that 60 years of age had higher prevalence of cognitive impairment. A statistically significant correlation was found between CDT scores, fixation loss, false negatives , Visual Field Index and severity of disease.
Conclusion: Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease and can be associated with other neurodegenerative diseases. Cognitive impairment causes reduced VF reliability . Hence all glaucoma patients must be screened using these simple and quick cognitive function assessment tests which is important to evaluate VF progression in glaucoma patients.
