Abstract
Aim: To demonstrate viral proteins/inflammatory cytokines in a patient with unilateral keratouveitis.
Method: Retrospective case report
Results: A 70-year-old Asian Indian male presented with acute onset of blurring of vision in the left eye (OS) of 2 days duration. Previous cataract surgery/ laser photocoagulation was done in both eyes. He was COVID-19 positive 3 months earlier.
OS was clinically diagnosed with herpetic keratouveitis.
Tear samples were collected on the Schirmer’s strips and tear wash for mass spectrometry and cytokines.
Tear sample from the RE and LE respectively had 368 and 451 viral proteins using Nano LC- Mass spectrometry which was more than controls. Cytokine analysis using flow cytometer analysis showed higher inflammation in OS as compared to OD.
Patient was treated with oral acyclovir and topical steroids and resulted in resolution of his keratouveitis.
Conclusion: We were able to demonstrate both SARSCoV2 and viral proteins(VZV) in this patient.
